An update from Maple Lodge Farms regarding the ongoing COVID -19 Pandemic

As new cases of COVID-19 continue to surge in our communities, we have seen a parallel rise in the number of our employees reporting positive diagnoses for the disease.

Since the start of the pandemic, across our Ontario operations (approximately 2600 people), we have been notified of a total of 68 positive employee cases requiring contact tracing in our facilities; 12 since our last update on December 4, 2020. It is with great sadness that we report that one of those employees has recently passed away. We have extended our deepest condolences and support to their family, friends and colleagues.

Although we are encouraged by the arrival of vaccines deemed to be effective against COVID-19, it is anticipated that, for the population to be immunized, it could take up to 12 months. Given the growing number of cases in our communities and the projections that cases will continue to rise over the winter, the reality is that we will be dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic for some time, making it imperative that we remain diligent in following public health recommendations.

Given the persistent and growing threat of the virus, we continue to impress upon our employees the constant need to follow all preventive measures carefully, both inside and outside of the workplace, in order to protect their health.

Some of the preventive measures we have put in place in the workplace include the following:

  • We have suspended all visitors to our facility outside of those deemed essential to the operation of our business for example, contractors and delivery drivers
  • We maintain a strict screening policy, ensuring only healthy people enter our workplace
  • We require all employees and essential visitors to wear masks at all times in all areas of our facilities
  • We have added temporary lunchroom spaces and equipped all common spaces with multiple, portable hand-washing and sanitization stations
  • We have imposed physical distancing measures in our common spaces including the installation of Plexiglas shields in between adjacent seating areas in our cafeteria
  • We have equipped all of our production employees with personal protective equipment over and above that which may be required in the course of their usual duties, including masks, face shields, aprons, and gloves
  • We have staggered our production shifts for better physical distancing
  • We have implemented precautionary and frequent deep cleaning initiatives and added ongoing cleaning rotations for frequently used areas/surfaces to our already rigorous sanitation procedures
  • We communicate openly and frequently with our employees through bulletins, letters and tv monitors in common spaces to keep them informed and provide them information on handwashing and other hygiene measures, as well as tips on how to stay safe outside of the workplace
  • We work closely with local Public Health Agencies and the Ministry of Labour to ensure our infection control measures are effective and up-to-date
  • We meet weekly with our onsite CFIA management team to share information and establish collaborative efforts to keep all of our employees safe
  • We work together with the rest of our industry to share knowledge and develop best practices, and continue to consult with health experts and regulators to ensure that we are doing the best possible job in combating the spread of this disease

Although we are confident in the preventive measures we have put in place, we remain focused on continuous improvement, updating our policies, procedures and preventive measures, as knowledge and science evolves, in order to keep our employees, communities, suppliers and customers safe, and our business running. As an essential workplace, we are working hard to ensure that we can continue to keep food on the table of Canadians throughout these extraordinary times.

An update from Maple Lodge Farms regarding the ongoing COVID -19 Pandemic

Last week, Ontario again reported record-breaking numbers of new COVID-19 cases. The rolling seven-day average of new daily cases in the Province now stands at 1,560. Toronto and Peel regions remain in lockdown under the Ontario Government’s COVID-19 response framework.

We are encouraged by the Federal government’s recent approval of vaccines deemed to be effective against COVID-19. However, it is purported that, for the population to be immunized, it could take up to 18 months. Given the growing number of cases in our communities and the projections that cases could continue to rise over the winter, the reality is that we will be dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic for some time, making it imperative that we remain diligent in following public health recommendations.

Across our Ontario operations (approximately 2600 people), we have been notified of a total of 56 employees testing positive for the disease since mid-April requiring contact tracing in our facilities; 10 in the past week. At this time, our operations remain unaffected but given the rapidly rising number of cases in our communities, we remain extra vigilant.

Given the persistent and growing threat of the virus, we continue to impress upon our employees the constant need to follow all preventive measures carefully, both inside and outside of the workplace, in order to protect their health.

Some of the preventive measures we have put in place in the workplace include the following:

As an essential workplace, we are working hard to ensure that we can continue to keep food on the table of Canadians throughout these extraordinary times.

An update from Maple Lodge Farms regarding the ongoing COVID -19 Pandemic

This past week, Ontario reported several consecutive record-breaking days for new COVID-19 cases. The Province has launched a colour-coded framework for COVID-19 restrictions, but regions hardest hit, including Toronto and Peel, have imposed more severe restrictions in an attempt to control the surging number of cases.

This week, we had one employee in our hatchery operations and one employee at our Brampton plant report that they had tested positive for COVID-19.  Across our Ontario operations, we have been notified of a total of 39 employees testing positive for the disease since mid-April.

Given the sustained threat of virus spread, we continue to impress upon our employees the constant need to follow all preventive measures carefully, both inside and outside of the workplace, in order to protect their health.

Some of the preventive measures we have put in place in the workplace include the following:

As an essential workplace, we are working hard to ensure that we can continue to keep food on the table of Canadians throughout these extraordinary times.

Once again, we encourage everyone to carefully practice the recommended public health measures in order to reduce the risk of contracting or spreading the virus. Only through consistent and concerted efforts can we control this disease.

An update from Maple Lodge Farms regarding the ongoing COVID -19 Pandemic

This past week, Ontario reported a seven-day average of 919 new COVID-19 cases per day, underlining the fact that we must renew our resolve to consistently practice public health measures to prevent the further spread of this disease.   As numbers continue to climb in Ontario, those regions with the greatest escalation of new cases – Toronto, Peel, York and Ottawa – have been ordered back to modified stage II restrictions.

This week, we had an employee at our Mississauga Distribution Centre report that they had tested positive for COVID-19; our second reported case at this facility since the start of the pandemic. Across our Ontario operations, we have been notified of a total of 36 employees testing positive for the disease since mid-April.

Given the sustained threat of virus spread, we continue to impress upon our employees the constant need to follow all preventive measures carefully, both inside and outside of the workplace, in order to protect their health.

Once again, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant in their prevention practices in order to reduce the magnitude and impact of this second wave.

An update from Maple Lodge Farms regarding the ongoing COVID -19 Pandemic

As the second wave of COVID-19 sweeps across the globe, many regions across Canada are witnessing their highest numbers in new cases to date, underlining the fact that this virus continues to spread.

As numbers rise in Ontario, those regions with the greatest escalation of new cases are being ordered back to modified stage II restrictions. Peel Region, including Brampton, where our corporate headquarters and primary processing plant are located, and many of our employees reside, has been a community amongst those hardest hit. To date, from the start of the pandemic, we have been made aware that 34 employees have tested positive for COVID-19. As such, we continue to impress upon our employees the constant need to follow all preventive measures carefully, both inside and outside of the workplace, in order to protect their health.

An update from Maple Lodge Farms regarding the ongoing COVID -19 Pandemic

After a brief reprieve over the summer, cases of COVID-19 are again rising rapidly in communities across Ontario.  With the further opening of businesses and schools, and more activities moving indoors as the cooler weather approaches, the disease is making a resurgence, which is concerning, and our collective efforts are required to stop the spread of the virus in our communities, businesses and social circles.

At MLF, we remain committed to keeping employees informed of all positive COVID-19 cases that require contact tracing in our workplace, while preserving the privacy of individuals. This week, it was reported to us by one of our employees that they had tested positive for COVID-19.  In total, since the start of the pandemic, we have been notified of 32 of our employees testing positive for the virus.  As such, we continue to impress upon our employees the constant need to follow all preventive measures carefully, both inside and outside of the workplace, in order to protect their health.

An update from Maple Lodge Farms regarding the ongoing COVID -19 Pandemic

Cases of COVID-19 are on the rise again in Ontario, with over 200 new cases being reported by the Province each day for the past four days. With the further opening of businesses and schools, and more activities moving indoors as the cooler weather approaches, this trend is concerning and requires our collective efforts to stop this trend and prevent a second wave of the disease.

At MLF, after a prolonged period of having no reported employee cases*, this past week we have been notified by an employee that they have tested positive for COVID-19. Although Peel Public Health has deemed that there is no risk to our workplace due to the particular circumstances and length of time the employee was outside of the workplace prior to experiencing symptoms, this incident serves as an important reminder that the disease is still present in our communities and that we must continue to consistently practice prevention measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our homes, workplaces and social groups.

As such, we continue to impress upon our employees the constant need to follow all preventive measures carefully, both inside and outside of the workplace, in order to protect their health.

Some of the preventive measures we have put in place in the workplace include the following:

*From the onset of the pandemic, we have been notified of 31 employees receiving positive test results.

An update from Maple Lodge Farms regarding the ongoing COVID -19 Pandemic

We are encouraged by the slowing trend of COVID-19 infections across Canada, and proud of the success we have had through our collective efforts to slow the spread of the disease.

It has now been several weeks since our last employee case of COVID-19. Although this gives us a sense of optimism, we know that we all must remain careful and diligent in our practices to prevent a resurgence of the disease. As such, we continue to impress upon our employees the constant need to follow all preventive measures carefully, both inside and outside of the workplace, in order to protect their health.

Some of the preventive measures we have put in place in the workplace include the following:

  • We have suspended all visitors to our facility outside of those deemed essential to the operation of our business for example, contractors and delivery drivers

  • We have worked together with the rest of our industry to share knowledge and develop best practices, and have consulted with health experts and regulators to ensure that we are doing the best possible job in combating the spread of this disease.

Although we are confident in the preventive measures we have put in place, we remain focused on continuous improvement, updating our policies, procedures and preventive measures, in order to keep our employees, communities, suppliers and customers safe, and our business running.

While maintaining our emphasis on prevention, over the coming weeks we will slowly shift our focus to recovery and further contemplate how our business will function in this new world order. As with all societies, governments, businesses and individuals, our new reality will take form over the coming months and we will seek new ways to not only survive but thrive.

In addition to getting used to new ways of working, we are taking the time to assess our emergency response and use this knowledge to improve those aspects of our business which need improvement so in the end, we come out stronger.

Our optimism, however, does not overshadow the fact that many in our community have been profoundly impacted by the pandemic and are struggling with food insecurity. Through our partnerships with Food Bank networks, and special initiatives such as the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment efforts to feed frontline workers and those in need, we have donated more than $600,000 of chicken to help address the rising need in our communities. We are truly inspired by the dedication of the agencies and proud to be part of the efforts.

And finally, we have to say it again – we are incredibly thankful to our employees who continue to feed their fellow Canadians. They are truly an inspiration to us.

Maple Lodge Farms Completes Module Washer Efficiency Upgrade

Maple Lodge Farms – Canada’s largest chicken processor – has successfully upgraded its Module Washers in an effort to reduce its environmental footprint and fulfill its commitment to the responsible use of resources in its operations. The project has reduced water usage in this facet of its operations by 62% annually, garnering praise from the Region of Peel.

About The Module Washer Efficiency Upgrade

Prior to their adoption of the new transport system, Maple Lodge Farms used two crate washing systems to clean their chicken crates. With the advent of a new transport container system, two new high-efficiency wash systems were installed in their place, which utilize more recirculated water and high-pressure flows.

Water Savings

Water usage for Maple Lodge Farms former crate washing system was measured at 8.3 million litres/year (roughly 350,245,647 cups!). After the wash system replacement, water use decreased by 62% annually.

In addition to shining a light on improved environmental sustainability, the new Module Washer has also resulted in economic benefits for the company. Maple Lode Farms is projected to save $75,827 in water cost savings annually, as well as earning a one-time rebate from the Region for $35,331.

Maple Lodge Farms consistently seeks new ways to operate more efficiently and conserve valuable resources. These efforts recently resulted in the adoption of a more humane way to transport chickens, including new transport containers (modules) and an upgraded container washing system.
