Maple Lodge Farms holds contracts with several local Ontario farmers and as such, the grain that each farmer feeds their chickens will vary to some degree. However, the main ingredient of chicken feed (over 85%) is grains and grain by-products, along with meal made from protein-producing seeds, such as canola or soybean meal. Vitamin and minerals are also commonly added to prevent any nutrient deficiencies. For further information on how chickens are raised, please visit the Chicken Farmers of Canada website here.

In general, outside of organic farming, chickens that are raised in Canada are “free-run”, that is, they are raised to roam freely in climate-controlled barns with free access to food and water. This form of chicken rearing protects the birds from the elements and from predators, giving the birds a safe and comfortable environment in which to grow. The term “free range”, however, denotes a form of chicken rearing where chickens have access to the outdoors for at least part of the day. In Canada, there are no specific requirements, such as the length of time spent outdoors or the type of environment, in order to use these claims. For further information, please visit the Chicken Farmers of Canada website here.

The use of hormones (including steroid hormones) in chicken production has been banned in Canada since 1963. It is illegal and has been for more than 55 years, so you can rest assured that you are not consuming hormones when you eat chicken. To ensure compliance, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency employs a surveillance program whereby meat samples are routinely tested for chemical residues including hormones. For further information, please visit the Chicken Farmers of Canada here.

Maple Lodge Farms has contracts with several local Ontario farmers and as such, the grain that each farmer feeds their chickens will vary to some degree. It is a general practice (outside of organic farming or those labeled “raised without antibiotics”) to use a very small amount of antibiotic in chicken feed to prevent birds from developing disease. In this way, veterinary antibiotics play an integral role in providing safe food for consumers as well as in animal welfare and animal health.
